THE NOT SO SAVAGE FILES- BRITISH PUBS
British pubs are great. They're old and charming, just like my Mum. Difference is, Mum won't give you a beer!
One of the first things you'll notice about British pubs- after the warm beer- is the variety of quirky names they give themselves. In Australia, we're not so imaginitive. Every town seems to have a Central pub, a Commercial pub, a pub named after the town itself, or in the cities they would be named after the particular suburb (how creative!) In Britain, there is no end to the array of strange and confusing pub names.
I've been told that these colourful names date back to the days when much of the population was illiterate (the 1970's?) and pubs therefore had to identify themselves by pictures, not words. So in honour of this institution, I give you The Savage Files tribute to British pubs!
If you have your own photos of unusually named British pubs, I'd be interested to add them to this page.
Thanks again for visiting The Savage Files and a big thank you for your help.
